The US Army celebrates a big birthday on June 14th. The Army is now 238 years old.

The date marks the day in 1775 when Congress first voted and formed the Army. That was in response to the Revolutionary War and the fact that a unified force of soldiers was needed to fight the British.

That battle was a long time ago, but most of the values adopted at that time still stand true. Colonel John Hamilton with the US Army says the mission of preserving freedom still remains the same 238 years later, "I see it as 238 years of service, of sacrifice, of loss life, but great friendships, and making a huge difference in the defense of our nation and the spread of freedom around the world."

Hundreds of people on Redstone Arsenal took part in a 5K run or 2.2K walk on Friday in honor of the Army's birthday.
