To either keep or fire Carol Wicks as Director of Animal Services will be a decision made by the city council. If it comes to that, it would be put on a Decatur City Council meeting agenda for further review. So far, it is not on the agenda for their next meeting on Sep 2. If the issue comes before the city council, that's when we hope to find out why Mayor Kyle decided to put Wicks on paid administrative leave. He will not comment on it, saying he cannot talk about a pending personnel issue. LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Authorities in the Shoals are alerting consumers about scam artists. For the last several months police across the Shoals have seen an increase in phony phone calls.

Investigators said the callers are trying to steal people's money and/or identity. According to authorities, with advancements in technology crooks are turning to cell phones and computers to commit their crimes.

Recently police in the Shoals have dealt with callers claiming to work with utility departments, raising money for volunteer fire departments. Some are even callers who claim to be members of federal agencies.

Investigators said these fake calls can be alarming because no one wants to go without power or go to jail as some of the calls suggest.

Police said no one is exempt, these calls target people of all ages.

"We see an increase every year. A lot of times it's mail-in type of scams, this year it's been very much telephone or internet based type of scams. People are beginning to get checks back from their taxes. This is a time when a lot of organizations begin to solicitation for their yearly finances so we have seen a significant increase across the board in scams," said Brad Holmes with the Florence Police Department.
