State dept. defends hacking for security information

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (POOL/CNN) - U.S. Intelligence Agents have been hacking computer networks around the world for years, NSA leaker Edward Snowden said Wednesday in the South China Morning Post Newspaper.

Snowden's allegation comes not long after U.S. complaints about Chinese hacking of American Institutions.

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki says the two countries are not looking for the same information.

"There is a difference between, going after economic data and financial information that is part of these cyber attacks, or seems to be, and an issue which the president has welcomed a debate and the administration has welcomed the debate on which is surveillance and going after people who mean to do harm," Psaki said.

Snowden worked for a computer consulting firm until Monday when he was fired for leaking information about alleged hacking by the NSA.
