To either keep or fire Carol Wicks as Director of Animal Services will be a decision made by the city council. If it comes to that, it would be put on a Decatur City Council meeting agenda for further review. So far, it is not on the agenda for their next meeting on Sep 2. MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Jury selection is scheduled to begin in federal court in Montgomery in the trial of a former prison supervisor accused of severely beating an inmate and then covering it up when the inmate died.

U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson set jury selection to begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the trial of Michael Smith. He was a lieutenant and shift supervisor at Ventress Correctional Facility in 2010 when inmate Rocrast Mack was severely beaten. Smith was fired by the state Department of Corrections, and then indicted by a federal grand jury. His attorney maintains he was not involved in any conspiracy to cover up what happened.

Two other former prison employees have already pleaded guilty in the case, and one other is awaiting trial after Smith.
