Huntsville Airport Authority approves incentive package

Posted: Updated:
HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

In an effort to keep North Alabama travelers from driving to competing airports to fly, airport officials are putting up an incentive package for airlines to keep them in Huntsville.

Tuesday morning, the Huntsville-Madison County Airport Authority approved the budget for 2014 including more than $6-million in incentives.

Since the airport doesn't control what the airlines charge at the ticket counter, officials hope the incentives will help airlines drop their prices.

The money does come with conditions for airlines to meet standards. $1-million could go to airlines that meet standards like on-time arrivals, baggage handling and customer care. $2-million could go to an airline that steps up first to create a plan to get people off the highway, which will have to show in lower fares. And another $3-million is there if the airlines can increase passenger traffic by $200,000.

"We are simply trying to put before them a win-win situation where they will respond to the incentives that we put out and that will help the citizens in our community in lowering their costs at the Huntsville International Airport," said Executive Director Rick Turner.

To do this, the airport is not borrowing any money or using tax payer dollars. It will all come from existing revenue the airport pulls in from its users.
