FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

The city of Florence is joining Adem in a pilot recycling program. The city received a grant to distribute 1,200 recycle carts to residents in different areas across the city.

Over the next 12 months the city will monitor the usage of the carts based on gps tracking.

The new program is a way to help promote Florence's green initiative and make it easier for people to help.

"It's a vital part of it, recycling is big in Florence people really like to do it so this will make it easier on them and that's what we hope to prove is this is a better way to do it than the way we've been doing it and we'll see the affect that it has on the participation," said David Koonce, Solid Waste & Recycling Director.

Crews will continue delivering the blue carts Tuesday.
