HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

As the temperatures rise this summer, sometimes the crime rate rises with it. That can mean trouble for teenagers, especially those who are out of school. Officials say there are outlets you can use to keep your kids out of trouble.

"The fact that the weather is much better, people are out and when people are out there are more opportunities for crime," said Deputy Chief Kirk Giles with Huntsville Police Department.

Giles said those summer opportunities can be prevented.

"It's good for parents to know where your kids are and for the community to pull together and kind of keep an eye on each other," he said. "Keep them busy, if you will. There are so many programs out here like the Boys and Girls club and the YMCA and many other groups that the kids can get involved with."

Harold Weatherly is the Director of Operations with the Boys and Girls club. He says there are 10 sites throughout Madison and Limestone counties. Ten sites that help at least 2500 kids a day, like Dashawn Scruggs. He's a 12-year-old who has been going to the Boys and Girls Club since he was 5.

"I like being here a lot because not only can the Boys and Girls Club take you far in life and help you succeed in the future, it helps you not go to jail," he said.

Weatherly said the Boys and Girls Club has a goal to keep children educated, entertained and off the streets through various programs.

"An idle mind, as they say, is the devil's workshop and that's when they get in trouble so we try to keep them engaged in things that are exciting and things that are fun and we basically call it fun with a purpose," he said.
