HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A Huntsville City School employee has been arrested in connection with a tax refund scheme orchestrated by an inmate of the Alabama state prison system.

Marlo Miller was one of six people arrested in the federal tax fraud conspiracy. She is accused of cashing and depositing fraudulent tax refund checks.

A Huntsville City School spokesperson confirms Miller is a custodian at Columbia High School. They said she has been placed on administrative leave and further action is pending.

According to federal agents, the man charged as the leader of the conspiracy was an inmate of Donaldson Correctional Facility at the time of the scheme. Shermaine German is now incarcerated at Bibb County Correctional Facility.

Federal agents said German obtained the identities and personal information of fellow inmates and used their information to create false income tax returns. The inmates were typically on death row or serving life sentences without parole.

Investigators said he used the outside help of seven people to create the false documents and collect the fraudulent refund checks.

Six of the seven suspects were arrested Thursday. They are Ronald Webster, 55, Brenda McDonald, 55, and Yvette Pinckney, all of Montgomery; Marlo Miller, 46, and Irene Douglas, both of Huntsville; Cynthia Ware, 49, of Eufaula; and Barbara Grimes, 62, of Mobile.

Court documents show Miller will be arraigned next week at the federal courthouse in Huntsville.
