GRANT, AL (WAFF) -

In Marshall County, a teenager is facing criminal charges in a landmark case. He is accused of attacking a teacher during a fight, and he has now been indicted on assault charges.

It is believed he is the first person in Marshall County to be indicted under a law which makes it a felony to assault a school employee.

Justin Blake Pittman, 18 of Grant, was served notice of his indictment on second degree assault charges.

Authorities said Pittman and another student were fighting in the lunch room last December at DAR school in Grant. Two teachers came to pull the students away from each other.

As teacher Matthew Dennis attempted to pull Pittman away, investigators said Pittman struck Dennis in the face with his elbow, breaking his nose.

Dennis was taken from the school to seek medical treatment for his injuries.

Pittman is now due before a Marshall County circuit judge to be arraigned on the charges August 12.
