Cullman County, AL (WAFF) -

Attorney General Luther Strange traveled across Alabama Wednesday to let people know that although they may not live on or do business on the Gulf Coast, if the BP oil spill affected them, they may be eligible for compensation. Strange's first stop was at the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce where he spoke to business owners and attorneys.

"Since our entire coastline was covered in oil, it affected all the businesses in the state. Whether you realize it or not, you may be eligible," Strange said.

Strange, who also spoke to residents and business owners in Huntsville and Birmingham, said most of the claims are coming from businesses. Individuals affected can try to make their claim, too. For example, employees who lost wages because of their employers took a hit because of the spill.

"The main goal is to make sure people understand that they're included in the settlement fund, and they can apply and see whether they qualify or not. Because we don't want people to someday find out they were eligible and did not know about it. They might be surprised because most all the state was affected," Strange said.

For businesses, there are formulas that determine eligibility based on comparing revenue from the year before the spill, in the immediate aftermath of the disaster, and the year after the Deepwater Horizon Oil rig exploded. The dealing for filing a claim is April 22nd, 2014.
