A baby fox was caught in a trap in a Madison neighborhood Wednesday morning.

Police said the person living there was concerned about a possible wild animal that might attack his dog and asked for a trap from Animal Control.

Animal Control officers were called to the home on Jarrett Lane and found the culprit -- a fox pup that made its way into the trap.

The City of Madison Animal Control, which falls under the special operations division of Madison Police, will release the young fox back into a rural area.

"This little guy's going to go back out away from populated areas, back out into the wild, if you will, back out into nature, where he could do what foxes do. Where he can follow nature and grow up to be a big fox," Madison Police captain John Stringer said.

Stringer said Animal Control has received several calls about wild animals in the area, citing springtime as a possible reason.

This is the second fox Animal Control has caught within two weeks, according to police.

Stringer said if homeowners have a problem with wild animals, they should call Animal Control for a trap instead of setting up their own.

"Remember, this is still a wild animal and therefore it does pose a danger. It's not something that people need to panic about but it's something they don't need to try to approach or pick up on their own," Stringer said.
