COLBERT COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Commissioners in Colbert County are putting public safety first when it comes to storm readiness.

Crews spent the day installing the first wave of community storm shelters.

The county has until June of 2015 to install all 22 FEMA approved and funded shelters.

EMA officials said they would like to install all the shelters in three waves. They started with seven shelters on Tuesday.

"We feel that it's very important. A lot of people have basements. A lot of people have different things that they run to, but also there's people that don't have basements or they have maybe tall trees in their yard that they're scared that could fall across the house, so there's several different reasons why these community storm shelters could help somebody," said Mike Melton with Colbert County EMA.

Colbert County has also been approved to add 24 new tornado sirens to the area. They are in the process of bidding 12 of them out now.
