Leavenworth officer helps deliver baby in hospital parking lot

LEAVENWORTH, KS (KCTV) -

When Officer Noah Wooten heard screams for help in the early morning hours of May 11, he immediately assumed the worst and sprinted up a hill.

Wooten said he thought someone was being assaulted or hurt. When he drew up, he saw a woman inside a vehicle parking just outside the Cushing Memorial Hospital's emergency room entrance.

"I could hear a female voice screaming, 'It's coming! It's coming!' Then when I got to the side of the car, I noticed she was in labor," Wooten explained.

The officer, who has been with the Leavenworth Police Department for just 10 months, kept his cool and assisted the baby's father, who was scurrying to get a wheelchair for his wife to rush her into the ER.

"I said, 'Go get help and I will take care of this,'" he recalled. "She [mom Kacie Lee] started pushing and you could see the top of the baby's head, then she gave a good push and she came out."

And as baby Shelby Lee arrived, so did the doctor.

"I decided to back off at that point because honestly I really had no idea what was going on," he laughs.

He did help support Kacie Lee as the hospital staff completed the birthing process and then finally got mother and child into the hospital.

According to the Leavenworth Times, Kacie Lee is a student at the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, and she was surprised by the quick arrival of her second child.

Kacie Lee is grateful to Wooten and looked on proudly as Wooten cuddled little Shelby during a recent visit.

"She's so healthy and I was so excited to see her," he said.

Wooten is grateful he had the opportunity to be part of something so special.

"You see people at their worst, and it was nice to see a family at their best," he said.

Kacie Lee declined an interview request by KCTV5.
