HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

For the second time this year, Huntsville International Airport has been named the most expensive airport in the country.

The airport has a stigma that they and city leaders are trying to shake. They are looking for a way to lower airfares from Huntsville.

They brought in an expert on Thursday to talk ticket prices and get to the root of the problem.

As he explained, it's very difficult to change the pricing structure.

MIT research engineer, William Swelbar said airlines price their tickets based on the demand of a market.

Airlines see Huntsville as a business community with travelers who tend to book their tickets last minute.  He said that's the reason airfare is so expensive here.

On top of that, the airline industry has changed. It is now more profit driven.

In the end, he believes not much can be done to lower airfares.

The makeup of the market is what it is, and bringing in more carriers won't help.

"A lot of people believe the silver bullet is having Southwest in a market. Southwest is not the cheapest provider today. It is not the same airline it was five years ago. There really is no carrier that remains in this consolidated environment that could really radically change the pricing structure," said Swelbar.

That's probably not what frequent flyers hoped to hear.

The expert urges people to shop between airlines and book as much in advance as possible.
