HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Members of the community gathered to honor and remember those injured and killed in that multi-vehicle crash on Wednesday night at the YMCA on Weatherly Road.  It was led by Life's Journey Church in Huntsville.

Those in attendance reflected on the life of 10-year-old Jayden Coppens.

It was a very emotional scene at the vigil.  Jayden and her family were called part of the YMCA family, and that's why they had the vigil here.

Those who knew Jayden describe an energetic, happy child who will truly be missed.

"Our sweet, beautiful Jayden had to leave us yesterday. We are all so sad past what words can express, but we know she is with God and not suffering," said her grandmother, Lucy Slater.

With heavy hearts and candles in hand, several members of the Huntsville community gathered to pray and remember Jayden.

"I think it's excellent. This is what we need. She's in a better place, and it's for people to be able to get together to heal and remember who she was and what she was," said Robert Broussard.

Broussard knew Jayden when she was in kindergarten. When he heard about the wreck Tuesday afternoon...

"I was devastated - terrible, just terrible. And I try to remember the good and where she's at," he said.

Jayden was a girl described as bubbly with an infectious smile who never knew a stranger and loved to play basketball at the YMCA.

"That's all I can say about her. She was amazing, and I am truly going to miss her, and her family is in my prayers," said former basketball coach, Robin Bowman.

While the community prays and tries to make sense of the senseless, those closely connected to the tragedy ask for one thing during this tough time.

"Let's keep all the families in our prayers because they are all good people."

A memorial fund has been set up for the Coppens family at Redstone Federal Credit Union to help with medical and funeral costs.
