GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A waterfront home owner is finding out the financial costs of not getting the proper permits from TVA before building a boat dock. His brand new dock is being torn down.

TVA officials said this is very rare but say it's what they have to do when the dock owner shows no cooperation.

Demolition to Eric Long's boat dock at a home off Wyeth Lane in Guntersville began Tuesday.

The dock on Lake Guntersville is estimated to be in the tens of thousands of dollars.

TVA officials said they were forced to file suit in federal court when Long repeatedly failed to follow TVA's permitting process for lake structures.

TVA filed suit in February, 2012.

In January, 2013, a federal judge agreed with TVA, giving Long 60 days to remove the dock or TVA could remove it and charge him.

On Wednesday, TVA spokesman Travis Brickey said work has temporarily stopped due to logistics issues.

He said the focus remains on compliance with TVA rules and regulations for water based facilities.

Long said negotiations are ongoing.
