FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

Police in the Shoals are adopting a national campaign to help fight crime in their communities.

The Florence Police Department has kicked off the See Something, Say Something campaign.

This campaign allows community members to take control in their neighborhoods and help report suspicious activity to police.

The Department of Homeland Security started See Something, Say Something as a nationwide campaign. Since then, it has been adopted on a local level in towns and cities across the U.S.

The goal is to get more community members to report suspicious activity to police.

Law enforcement officials say those tips often help lead to the arrest or prevention of crime.

Florence Police hope more people will take the time to call about suspicious activity in order to help crack down on crime.

"Want people in a local level in our local community, in our neighborhoods, if they see something that doesn't make sense that stands out, we want them to report it to police," said Florence Police Chief Ron Tyler. "It's not necessary for them to go investigate it on their own. That's what we're here for, and we don't want people to be afraid to report something they don't think is important. Let us decide what's important."

Florence Police have posted links on their Facebook page to several apps that will also allow you to anonymously submit photos and video to the department.
