DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

A new amphitheater is coming to Decatur. City officials broke ground for the project Friday.

The Founder Park Amphitheater will be built on Canal Street, right next to busy highway 20.

City officials said there are plans to keep all that traffic noise from affecting the experience of patrons who attend concerts at the amphitheater.

City Councilman Gary Hammon, who led the push to build the amphitheater, said workers will add on to the rise between the structure and the road to muffle the sounds from vehicles. An engineer is working on the plan.

"We're going to extend the berm bound. That was his suggestion," said Hammon. "We're probably going to elevate the berm three to four feet all the way down."

They will also use portable modular units to absorb outside noise.

"We're going to have acoustic panels rolled in and rolled out for the stage, so that's going to help a lot too," he explained.

So patrons will hear less traffic and more music. Officials said the amphitheater should be built within six months.

The city paid $50,000 for the $200,000 amphitheater project. Daikin donated $100,000 and the rest came from a state economic development grant.
