MARION COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A school in Marion County was evacuated after a train derailed Thursday afternoon.

A northbound Norfolk Southern Train derailed at least 13 cars at Bear Creek near Phillips High School at 12:15 p.m. Students were evacuated to St. Paul Church on Highway 79 in Franklin County.

According to Norfolk Southern, only six of the cars were loaded with freight. The train was carrying mineral oil, but authorities said there is no risk of chemical endangerment. The train was also carrying wood chips and cottonseed.

Two of the empty cars were previously carrying materials that are classified as hazardous materials, including crude oil and potassium carbonate. No materials leaked from the train.

A multitude of agencies responded to the scene including surrounding police departments, sheriff's deputies and Hazmat teams.

Due to the derailment, Phillips High School graduation has been moved to NWSCC in Phil Campbell and is scheduled for 8 p.m.

Alabama Highway 13 was closed in Bear Creek from Paul's Auto to Coops Bears Den, but has since re-opened.

No injuries were reported.

According to Bear Creek Police, the tracks were reopened to rail traffic Friday morning about 4:00 in Marion County.

Wreckage from the derailed train was moved to the side. A temporary replacement track is being used until more permanent repairs can be made

The cause of the derailment is under investigation.

David: Showers and storms ongoing across the Valley

    Saturday, March 25 2017 5:50 PM EDT2017-03-25 21:50:37 GMT

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
