Staying safe during Memorial Pkwy road work

Posted: Updated:
HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

As road work continues to improve Memorial Parkway, it is important to modify your day-to-day driving behaviors in order to remain safe in the construction zones.

Many additional hazards, including temporary signs and uneven lanes, appear on the roads, and may be harder to see at nighttime or during inclement weather.

The Missouri Department of Transportation, which is overseeing similar road works projects in that state, devised a list of "Three S's" to keep in mind while driving through long stretches of construction such as this:

  • Speed: Slow down while approaching all work zones, even if they may not appear to be staffed. Follow all posted speed limits and do not resume 'normal' speed until you see a sign indicating that it is safe to do so.
  • Space: Allow extra space between you and the car ahead of you, like you would in bad weather. For instance, some people may pass an uneven lane faster or slower than others, so that extra space will help allow for those variances in overcoming road obstacles. Avoid passing shoulders or medians if at all possible.
  • Stress: Keep your annoyance or anger in check while on the road. Pay attention and avoid distractions. Expect delays before you head out, and give yourself extra time to arrive at your destination. Consider alternate routes during known road work times.
