BOAZ, AL (WAFF) -

A man lands himself in jail after Boaz police say they found him with drugs outside the city's municipal courthouse.

Boaz Police Deputy Chief Todd Adams says someone told a court officer that they thought someone outside was smoking marijuana. The officer went to investigate and found 18 year old Carl Lee Williams asleep in the driver's seat of a car.

The officer woke Williams up and asked him if he had been smoking. Williams said he hadn't. The officer asked for permission to search the car and Williams gave him the O.K. The officer says he found the remains of salvia joints in the ashtray. After some hesitation, Williams admitted it was his and he was arrested. He has since been released from jail on a $500 property bond.

Salvia is a plant that comes from the mint family and can produce "visions" or other types of hallucinations. It is illegal in Alabama.
