TUSCUMBIA, AL (WAFF) -

Click It or Ticket: The annual campaign to crack down on seatbelt use is in full swing.

Law enforcement officers from across northwest Alabama gathered in Tuscumbia to kick off the event.

As the unofficial start of summer approaches, officers will aggressively enforce the use of seat-belts in motor vehicles.

Officers say they want to encourage drivers and passengers to take the extra step that, in most cases, may help save their lives.

"You have the option of not wearing a seatbelt. We are obligated that when we stop you for the violation to enforce the action because we know, historically, seatbelts will keep you alive more times than they won't," said Trooper Thad Chandler.

Last year, 513 people died on Alabama roadways.

Troopers said of that total, 251 of those victims were not wearing a seatbelt.
