CULLMAN, AL (WAFF) -

The Alabama Army National Guard 167th returned to Cullman Monday after nine months in various areas of Afghanistan.

Friends and family were anxious to greet the unit.

About 105 members of this unit served their country in various parts of Afghanistan. They served as personal security detail for civilian contractors and others.

One family member, 15-year-old Noah Farlow had to endure his freshman year in high school without his dad.

He said he understands everyone makes sacrifices, and he is just happy he will have his dad back.

He said he is very proud of his dad, serving his country when needed.

Christy Ryan is super anxious for her husband, Lt. David Ryan to meet their 2-month-old son, Sam.

"He's been able to Face Time throughout this whole process. He was there for the birth on Skype, but face to face it will be special," she said.

David kissed his wife and addressed his son.

"Hello! What do you think about this, big guy? I really don't know what to think at this moment. This has been a long time coming, so I'm just thankful to be here and this is a joy to say the least," he said.

Through laughter and tears, most eyes were on David and Sam, but even the family dog got in his share of welcome home kisses.

Now the guard members just want quiet reunions with friends and extended family.
