ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

Valley communities came together this week to honor those who lost their lives in the line of duty during Peace Officers Memorial Week.

The Athens Police Department honored fallen officers by raising flags, then lowering them to half staff at their grave sites.

The family of Officer Benton McLemore attended Friday's ceremony. McLemore was shot and killed during a domestic call in 1969.

"It's a great honor. He would be so pleased to know they were doing this for him. So we really appreciate it," said Bobby McLemore Wilson, daughter of fallen officer.

Six Athens officers have lost their lives in the line of duty. Five of them now have flags on their graves as a sign of honor.

The department will place one at the burial site of another officer who is laid to rest in Ardmore, Alabama when his family can be there for the ceremony.
