HOOVER, AL (WBRC) -

Hoover Police confirmed a woman who drove her car into Star Lake on Friday night has died.

The 68-year-old woman, identified as Deanna Owen Shumate, was transported to Brookwood Hospital after the accident. Investigators say Shumate had attended her 50th class reunion at the Hoover Country Club shortly before the accident. She graduated from Ensley High School in 1963.

"This case involved a very rapid response and intense effort by members of the Hoover Police and Fire Departments," Hoover Police Captain Jim Coker said in a release.

Monday, one of Shumate's friends says she is is still numb from the news but she's glad to have spent time with her before the accident.

"It was great. She seemed fine. We hugged each other and talked about families and greeted others. We had a wonderful time," Joyce Latta said.

Patrol officers, members of the Hoover Police Dive Team and many Hoover firefighters, including the Technical Rescue Unit, responded to the scene.

The accident is under investigation by Hoover officers who are trained in crash reconstruction. At this time investigators do not believe this was anything other than a tragic accident, but weather may have been a contributing factor.

The City of Hoover, the Hoover Police Department and the Hoover Fire Department jointly expressed their condolences to Shumate's family. Her funeral will be held Friday in Conway, Arkansas.
