MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Officials say every room is filled at the Father Purcell Memorial Exceptional Children's Center at the City of Saint Jude and some of those patients are really too old to be there.

There are 58 special needs children and young adults who live in this long-term care facility. We're talking infants to a young man who is 29.

The problem is the facility is really only supposed to house youth until their 21, but officials say what do you do, you just don't kick them out because they have no where to go.

The director says the center needs a young adult certification that will allow for expansion adding another wing with 20 rooms. Father Purcell Memorial Exceptional Children's Center Director Brenda Withers says that expansion costs $5 million dollars, but getting that money is another issue for this non-profit organization.

"There is really no place to put the children after they get a certain age or they become young adults. Some children have been here for 20 years and some over 20 years and it's really hard to put those children out because this is their home," Withers said.

The director doesn't know how long it will take to get the certification needed or the funding. But they are hoping that once the community learns of their need people will open their hearts and wallets. It costs about $7,000 a month house one child. There are only two children's nursing homes in the state both in Montgomery. Father Purcell Memorial is the only non-profit. To make a donation, call 334-265-6791.
