Editorial: "Change the drunk driving BAC level"

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Inmy editorial on Tuesday I chided our legislators for being the last state topass a no-brainer  bill legalizing home brewing.

TodayI want to challenge them to be one of the first states to pass anotherno-brainer; changing the blood alcohol content level constituting drunk drivingfrom .08 to .05.

Thisweek the National Transportation Safety Board recommended that change and forgood reasons.

Each year, nearly 10,000 people die inalcohol-related traffic accidents.

Each year, roughly 4 million people admit todriving while under the influence of alcohol.

The U.S. is one of only a handful of countriesthat have the BAC set this high.

Depending on your age, weight, sex andtolerance, you could have as many as 3 to 4 drinks in an hour and only reach.05 BAC.

Justas the home brewing law is about our rights, so would be a .05 BAC law is about our right not to be killed by a drunk driver.

Itwould be impossible to get a bill in this session of the legislature, but itcould be the first item on the docket come January 2014.
