LAWRENCE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Search crews in Lawrence County will returned to the water Thursday morning to search for a missing fisherman.

Courtland Fire Chief Scott Norwood said a man was fishing under a bridge along County Road 400 when he fell into Spring Creek, which feeds into Wheeler Lake.

Family members at the scene identified the man as 20-year-old Simeon Gray.

Law enforcement received a 911 call around 8:25 Wednesday night to report that Gray fell into the water.

Norwood said the rescue is now considered a recovery mission.

Fire and rescue teams from Morgan and Lawrence Counties responded to the scene for an extensive search that included Courtland Fire and Rescue, Killen Fire and Rescue and the Alabama Marine Police.

Witnesses told deputies Gray tried to cross the bridge near its bottom by going hand-in-hand. When he fell in the water, the strong current swept him away, according to witnesses.

Norwood said the Tennessee Valley Authority shut down Wheeler Dam Wednesday night to reduce the strength of the current in hopes of making rescue efforts easier.

Crews called off the search around 2 a.m. The search resumed around 10a.m. Thursday. They are using sonar to try to find his body.

Courtland Fire Chief Scott Norwood said they have divers from the Florence Police Department and the Colbert County EMA there, ready to go underwater if something is discovered.

Norwood said they will continue the search for Gray's body past sundown. If they can't find him, they will break until morning, then go back out to Spring Creek.
