HOOD COUNTY, TX (RNN) - Strong storms and tornadoes ripped through rural parts of Hood County, TX, Wednesday, killing at least six people.

The Granbury area, southwest of Fort Worth, appeared to be the community that sustained the most damage.

Preliminary reports from the National Weather Service say tornado was that hit Grandbury was an EF-4, meaning winds were between 166 mph to 200 mph.

Hood County Sheriff Roger Deeds says seven people are still unaccounted for, but they continue to look.

"We are doing a thorough search of the area again with the Search and Rescue Task Force 2 team from Dallas Fire and Rescue," Deeds said. "We've got them covering the area and we might do a more in depth search to cause I'm not going to leave and stone unturned."

The Hood County Sheriff's Office said the apparent twister initially touched down in Granbury. It then touched down again several times in Hood, Tarrant, Dallas and Parker counties.

At least two tornadoes touched down, destroying an untold number of homes. Many of the homes in the Rancho Brazos subdivision are Habitat for Humanity homes.

Sheriff Roger Deeds said many of the homes in that neighborhood sustained "heavy damage to totally destroyed."

During a press conference Thursday morning, Deeds said seven people are still unaccounted for.

According to Dallas affiliate WFAA, as many as 100 may be injured, and authorities are going door-to-door to check for people trapped in homes.

Storm surveys are planned for Thursday to determine the severity of damage to communities in north Texas, the National Weather Service stated.

"You can tell where the tornado went through because it's just wiped out, trees gone, houses completely demolished," one witness reported.

Area hospitals were on alert and anticipating an influx of patients.

Lake Granbury Medical Center received 37 patients, according to Deeds.

The American Red Cross has deployed to the area and opened two shelters in Granbury.

From Mineral Wells to Granbury, anywhere from pea- to baseball-sized hail rained down.

In addition, vehicles were stuck early Thursday morning in high water in the Dallas area, according to the Red Cross Dallas-Fort Worth's Twitter feed. Reports indicate as many as 200 vehicles were stranded.

Widespread wind damage was also reported in Ennis, TX, about 35 miles south of Dallas, the National Weather Service in Fort Worth stated.

According to the Associated Press, nearly 20,00 homes and business were without power early Thursday.
