MORGAN COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

People in Morgan County held a ceremony honoring fallen officers on Wednesday. It's been nearly 28 years since a law enforcement officer died in the line of duty there.

This time of the year is especially difficult for Deputy Bill Biles' family.

Next Tuesday marks the anniversary of the day he was shot. He died two days later. His widow, Dorothy Biles, said the yearly ceremony honoring fallen officers, always close to that anniversary, helps lift her spirits.

There are nine names of law enforcement officers on the memorial behind the county courthouse.

Biles was responding to a call about a suspicious car at Brewer High School. The man inside shot Biles, who shot the car's gas tank, eventually leading to the suspect's arrest. Biles died two days later.

Dorothy Biles said it brings her comfort to know her late husband is not forgotten by others.

"I appreciate it very much for the county to honor him. Like I said, it's very touching. I appreciate them doing it," she said.

"They respond immediately and instinctively when called upon. They never know from one call to the next what kind of danger they're going to face. And they run into the danger when others are running away," said Morgan County District Attorney Scott Anderson.

Anderson was the guest speaker on Wednesday. He said this is also a day to honor those who wear the badge now, who put their lives on the line on any given day.
