Guntersville leaders seek funding for SROs

GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Leaders in Guntersville are working to get financing to put a resource officer in every school.

Back in the 1990's, there was the Federal Cops More Program, designed to put more police officers on the streets.

The city has found a new program which will allow for the hiring of school resource officers.

Monday night, the city council approved seeking federal grant money to provide officers at Guntersville Elementary, Middle School, and Cherokee Elementary.

The school system currently has only one full time resource officer who is stationed at Guntersville High School.

Police Chief Jim Peterson said they are seeking a cops hiring grant, a federal grant designed to hire officers like SROs.

If approved, Peterson said it will only make a good security system great.

"I do feel a sense of safety as a parent here because of the current system that we do have, but my degree of confidence will go up dramatically if we can, in fact, have an officer on every campus," he said.

Peterson said they hope to hear back in time to put officers on campus for the next school year.
