Nearly $50-million in relief coming for April 27 outbreak

Local officials from across Alabama met with ADECA officials in Cullman Tuesday. Local officials from across Alabama met with ADECA officials in Cullman Tuesday.

More than two years after the April 27th tornado outbreak, millions more in federal dollars are coming to help on the road to recovery.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is providing more than $49-million in disaster relief funds for Alabama.

The money will be used for housing, infrastructure, and economic development. The requests from local governments and residents must show the money is needed to offset hardships caused by the tornadoes.

Local officials from across Alabama met with Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) officials in Cullman Tuesday. ADECA representatives advised on the process to request funding.

They said HUD will release guidelines within the next few days, and then the state will have 90 days to submit the plan of action. The Community Action Partnership is working to help low income people who cannot afford suitable housing.

"There's a lot of people living with family, living in unsafe, unsanitary conditions just out of necessity. They have no other choice," said Jack Steel of the Community Action Partnership of North Alabama. "There's a shortage of available housing in North Alabama. And with housing being one-third of the opportunity here, I see it as an ability to reduce that shortage and provide affordable housing solutions for those who need it."
