HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - The Southern Professional Hockey League may be getting a little less "southern" next fall.
According to multiple published reports, the Peoria Rivermen of the AHL have submitted formal requests to join the SPHL. Their wish is expected to be granted sometime this week, perhaps as early as Tuesday, as the league holds it's summer meetings.
Peoria may be joined by another midwestern team - the Bloomington Blaze are also in talks to join the league and may also be announced as new members this week. The Blaze are currently members of the CHL, which has fallen on hard times, losing several teams in the past decade.
Meanwhile, there's been no update on the future of the Augusta Riverhawks, though it seems unlikely they'd return for the 2013-2014 season.
