HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Owners of Amazon's Kindle Fire device will find a surprise on their accounts. Monday, Amazon launched a virtual currency, 'Coins', and deposited $5 worth, or 500 Coins, into every Fire customer's account.

Amazon Coins is being launched in response into other competing virtual end-user currencies, such as Facebook credits, Microsoft Points, and Bitcoins, each of which have had various levels of success. Virtual currencies can be purchased online or at physical stores on giftable plastic cards.

Coins can be spent on apps and games for Kindle Fire or on Android devices through the Amazon app store. At this time, Coins can not be redeemed for books or other physical goods from the online retailing giant.
