DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

A Morgan County man is outraged after he discovered a nearby cemetery in the area has been unkempt and tombstones moved. The cemetery doesn't appear to have a name, but Tony Cottingham said it has history.

"I was riding around and I actually discovered that all of the head stones had been pushed out of the way," Cottingham said.  "That wasn't the way I was brought up. I just don't understand why people would do something like that."

The cemetery has tombstones that date back to the 1900s, now covered with tall grass.  The fence that once surrounded it has been knocked down.

Cottingham said he doesn't know who is responsible for letting the cemetery get this bad, but he has a vision for the area he says used to look much different.

"I'd like to see the cemetery put back the way it was," he said.  "The way it use to look when I was little. Maybe put the fence back up that was around it and keep it clean."

Cottingham does not have any relatives who are buried at the site, but he hopes to reach someone who might so something can be done.

"I'll probably start maybe call some plants and see who might have done it or get in touch with the power company or something like that - see if I can find out anything," he said.
