DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

The 15th Annual Scam Jam Fraud Summit was held Thursday in Decatur aimed to educate senior citizens about crooks who try to rip off the elderly.

The Better Business Bureau and the Medicare Patrol hosted the event. People with the state Attorney General's office and local law enforcement were there to help.

One con they were talking about is the "grandparents scam." Crooks call pretending to be the victim's grandchild and say they desperately need money.

"The whole thing is to try to get you in a panic where you really won't think about it or check it, and you'll just go down and wire funds to them. We've had someone lose $4,500 to this scam," said Michele Mason, President/CEO of North Alabama BBB.

There were door prizes given out during the Scam Jam, including a paper shredder so the winner can shred her documents so crooks can't steal her identity by going through her trash.
