LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Students at Underwood Elementary School found an unloaded gun inside a canvas bag along the fence during recess Thursday morning around 11 a.m. The students were using the bag as home plate while they were playing.

The principal evacuated the playground immediately and informed the superintendent and deputies while student resource officers searched the area.

According to the SRO, an older .22 revolver was inside the bag. There were no bullets in the gun or the bag. Authorities said no students were ever in danger.

They said the gun and bag didn't appear to have anything to do with the school. Principal Kevin Moore sent the following letter to parents about the incident:

I would like to inform you of an incident today at school. I was notified that a gun had been found on EXTERIOR school property. I notified Mrs. Gray our superintendent. She immediately sent school resources officers to our campus The officers collected the gun and searched the playground area. Although the investigation is ongoing, there was nothing to suggest our school was or is in any immediate danger. I would like to thank Mrs. Gray, our resource officers, faculty/staff, and students for their assistance in this matter. Thank you for continued support of Underwood School.

Investigators with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department said the gun is connected to a bank robbery at Listerhill Credit Union that happened in 2011. They are handling the investigation.

David: Showers and storms ongoing across the Valley

    Saturday, March 25 2017 5:50 PM EDT2017-03-25 21:50:37 GMT

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
