LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A Shoals man is in jail, accused of abusing a 6-month-old child. The infant had to be treated for a fractured skull.

Investigators say the attack happened when 35-year-old Kristopher Phillips was staying at his girlfriend's house with the baby and another child.

Phillips claims the toddler sat on the baby's head, but according to doctors, police say his story doesn't add up.

The child is being treated at Children's Hospital in Birmingham.

Investigators said the baby is not only suffering from fractures to each side of his head, but he also has a broken arm.

Police believe all the injuries stem from Phillips' assault earlier this month.

Doctors tell police the baby is having seizures and has retinal hemorrhaging stemming from fractures to the baby's skull.

They say it's unclear at this time if the child will have any permanent damage.

An ER doctor at Shoals Hospital said treating small children is difficult because they're unable to talk and tell you what's wrong.

He said any violent acts against small children can have long lasting effects on their developing bodies.

"It can tear blood vessels in their brain, which can cause bleeding and the bleeding, if it doesn't cause an immediate problem, it can still cause problems later - such as they can develop seizures, they can develop developmental delays, and things like that," said Dr. Marlon Florida.

Florida said if a child is brought into the ER and they suspect signs of abuse or anything suspicious, by state law they have to report it to local authorities.
