HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

In the wake of tragedies like the Boston Bombings, the Sandy Hook school shooting, and even a mass shooting on the UAH campus, a team of UAH researchers is now working to improve campus security with the help of drones.

The unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, would fly above campus to monitor what is going on.

If there is some type of emergency, those drones could be sent to check it out immediately.

The idea is to create quicker response times by law enforcement.

The team of researchers at UAH is working with campus police to design the project based on law enforcement needs. The plan for the future is to have officers operate the unmanned aerial vehicles themselves.

The team is doing what is called "geofencing" by establishing campus boundaries for the vehicles to fly safely within.

They are also mapping out the entire campus including the interior of each building, so police will be able to check out specific places.

The team is working to develop UAVs that can be used on other school campuses as well.
