LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Lauderdale County Schools will get a security boost. The board of education hired a new school resource officer.

They now have two officers for 11 county schools.

The new SRO started this week.

It has been nearly two years since the Lauderdale County School Board has had more than one SRO to cover all the schools.

Superintendent Jennifer Gray said the new hire is a step in the right direction.

"This will ease the burden on him, plus provide a presence in more schools more often," she said.

With the help of funding from the Lauderdale County Commission, the two officers will now split the 75 mile stretch between Lauderdale County's 11 schools.

Gray is hopeful the additions will keep coming.

"It's a small step. Of course, the ultimate goal would be to have an SRO at every facility. We are going to pursue another SRO hopefully in October, and we're always looking for grants that will provide needed funds for additional SROs," said Gray.

She said the presence of security in schools is needed now more than ever and that her board will do whatever it takes to ensure safety in her district.

"We take student safety campus safety very seriously, and it's unfortunate that the recent tragedy at Sandy Hook has really caused a whole different perspective on what we're doing, but that is a priority of ours - to keep everyone safe while they're on our campuses," she said.

Gray said she hopes to add a third officer this fall.
