LIMESTONE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Federal, state and local agencies conducted an emergency preparedness drill for the Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant Wednesday. That drill got cut short because of an incident at the plant.

A Browns Ferry official said an intake pump outside of the plant that pumps in water from the river overheated. An alarm sounded. Everything turned out okay, but they terminated the drill so there wouldn't be any confusion.

The emergency preparedness drill was nearly complete. State and local emergency agencies work with TVA to make sure they have a coordinated plan of action in place in case of an incident. They did not know what the simulated situations would be until they unfolded. The simulation was a situation where there was a fuel spill in one nuclear reactor and a potential radiation leak in another.

"It usually starts out with the lowest level of emergency classification. Something at the plant where there is no radiation released. And then as the emergency escalates, then there's radiation potential at the plant. Then, if it moves beyond the plant, that's the highest level of emergency classification," said TVA spokesperson Scott Brooks.

This was a practice run for a full scale emergency drill next month.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will grade both Browns Ferry and the Alabama Emergency Management Agency on that performance and the results will be released to the public.
