Going solar could provide extra green

Posted: Updated:
HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

North Alabama residents who want to go green have a major incentive that could earn them extra "green."

Since October 2012, the Tennessee Valley Authority has offered a "Green Power Provider" program to residents and small businesses that want to convert to solar or wind power. To offset the initial costs associated with installing an alternative energy system, the TVA offers a one-time, $1,000 incentive check.

Additionally, TVA will pay participants for the use of the energy generated over a 20 year term. The first ten years will see TVA pay nine cents per kilowatt-hour on top of standard retail rates, followed by the retail rate alone for additional ten years.
