Recent college grads weigh in on job market

Friday's National unemployment numbers put a positive outlook on the economy. The Labor Department announced the unemployment rate dropped to 7.5 percent in April.  This is lowest jobless number in four years.

The Labor Department report shows employers added 165,000 jobs in April, 138,000 jobs in March and 332,000 jobs in February. Economists say this is a reassuring sign the job market is improving despite higher taxes and government spending cuts that took effect this year.

These numbers come in right around the time hundreds of students are preparing to cross the stage to get their degree and enter a new stage in their life: the working world.

"It's very intimidating just because you can see how many students we have around graduating, plus all the other schools in this area so you kind of have to set yourself a part as a new grad," said UAH Nursing student Sydney Edmondson.

The overall employment picture showing promise, but some new college graduates may not be so lucky when it comes to finding work. A&M graduate Branden Gaddis knows it's going to take more than a degree to get a job in Communications.

"I'm confident but it's going to take a lot of work from myself," he said.  "I wonder how much effort do I have to put in. It's not going to be given to me."

A survey released last week from the National Association of Colleges and Employers reported that businesses plan to hire only 2.1 percent more college graduates from the class of 2013 than they did the class of 2012. That's way down from an earlier NACE projection of 13 percent hiring rate for 2013 grads.

"It's not great right now but it's going to come back around because I think that everything comes back around," said A&M graduate Tony Hawkes.
