Nashville NRA members watching convention closely

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Thousands of gun enthusiasts are gathering in Houston, TX, this weekend for the National Rifle Association's annual convention.

Meanwhile, many in Nashville are keeping a close eye on everything happening, as the NRA will hold its convention here in just two years.

NRA members like Leroy Farris, at the Nashville Armory, said the convention is an opportunity to see what is new in firearms.

"I'm a trainer, so I'm particularly looking for anything that's new in training or new in the firearms field. All of the firearm manufacturers are there, ammunition manufacturers are there," Farris said.

He's also looking ahead to 2015 when the NRA convention will be in held at the Music City Center, where he plans to volunteer.

It's expected to be one of the biggest gatherings Nashville has ever seen.

"It's a big thing to Nashville, because it brings income into Nashville for the time that its here," Farris said.

Though still two years away, the planned convention has already brought controversy with some people petitioning Mayor Karl Dean to take back the gun lobby's invitation.

It appears that won't happen, but local opponents are promising protests and say they will fight to keep assault-style weapons from being sold in Nashville.

"That would be our hope, that we could curtail some of that activity that is so very dangerous," said Linda McFadyen-Ketchum.

The NRA will start recruiting local volunteers next year for its Nashville convention.

Right now, in Houston, the energy is high. The NRA is fresh off a major victory in Congress after lawmakers blocked stricter gun laws proposed in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.
