Guntersville cleanup postponed due to inclement weather

GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

All the trash alongside the road and on the shoreline of the lake in Guntersville will have to stay for three more days.

Weather has postponed Guntersville's biggest cleanup day of the year.

Officials said it was a tough decision to have to postpone the event until next Tuesday but they feel it's just too hard to get support to pickup when it's raining.

The event was set to get started on Saturday at City Harbor at 8 a.m., but the threat of rain prompted city officials to push the date to Tuesday.

This year the town plans to use new equipment to help all the volunteers with the cleanup.

The group Keep Guntersville Beautiful sponsors the event.

Earlier this year, officials went to different locations to identify trouble spots for trash, which includes Wyeth Mountain Road along the Lake Guntersville shoreline.

Tuesday, officials hope for a better turnout and are asking boaters to help.

"So we're encouraging people if they're out on their boats when we have the event and are able to see something, to try to retrieve it, and we're doing it on land as well," said Nicole Reyes with Keep Guntersville Beautiful.

If you want to volunteer, be at City Harbor at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

The cleanup should be over around 6:30 p.m.

Volunteers are invited to stay for a light dinner.
