MORGAN COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

The Alabama Department of Labor reported that the demand for heavy truck and tractor trailer drivers was second only to registered nurse positions that needed filled in March. There were 1,975 truck driver postings as compared to 2,009 for registered nurses.

The demand means a chance for employment for people like Isaac Posey of Athens. He is halfway through his four week training at the E.S.D Truck Driving School in Decatur.

"I used to frame houses, and since the economy failed since about '08, it's been hard to find work," Posey said. "Had a dream since I was a little boy to do this."

The school's instructor, Ron Mullard, said people like Posey are who companies are looking for because they have a clean driving record.

He said the need for more drivers has increased, in part, because of new federal regulations. A truck driver's record is now affected not just by moving violations, but also non-moving offenses, such as citations for being over the freight weight limit. That means more fines for companies, and veteran drivers with too many violations are being let go.

"They feel like they can do better with a trainee than somebody that's been driving for a while and has a lot of bad habits," Mullard said.

He added that more drivers are also needed because more goods are being shipped than during the recession.

"The amount of freight being hauled is just going to keep increasing over the next 10 years, and they expect there to be a shortage of drivers," Mullard said.
