Injured soldier, wife move into donated mortgage-free home

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A soldier and his wife have a new place to call home, and it was donated to them mortgage-free by a group that helps soldiers across the country.

Just a month after Hank and Kayla Loutzenhiser were married, he was injured while preparing for deployment to Afghanistan, and they've spent two years since in San Antonio while he underwent treatment.

"Our honeymoon suite was a hospital room for a few months, so this is a big upgrade," Hank Loutzenhiser said.

The Madison home is a former foreclosure with some new upgrades donated through a program called Operation Homefront.

"Through this program, what they'll do is rent this home from us for about a year - anywhere from a year to two years. We take their property tax, escrow costs and a yearly maintenance plan and divide that payment by 12. And it's a lot lower because there is no mortgage involved," said Amanda Shaunessy, with Operation Homefront.

The couple was handed the deed free and clear, and Kayla Loutzenhiser said she already has some big plans for the three-bedroom home.

"Well, we have two dogs that are pretty spoiled and sleep with us. So I was hoping we'd have a room big enough to put a king-sized bed," she said.

Hank Loutzenhiser is just happy to be walking again and can't wait to get out in the yard.

"Grilling," he said, laughing. "We've already picked one out."

And they have the perfect spot for it, thanks to the generosity of Operation Homefront, which has provided 107 homes to veterans, service members and their families.
