BOAZ, AL (WAFF) -

Investigators responded to a deadly fire at an apartment complex in Boaz on Tuesday around noon.

A woman inside one of the apartments at the Adams Crossing Apartment Complex on Brown Street was rushed to a nearby hospital, but died a short time after arriving.

Firefighters said it appears the fire started in the living room area.

Linda Delong, 63, died from her injuries.

Authorities believe Delong was asleep in a back room when she woke up to smoke or the smoke detector.

"We know there were smoke detectors in the residence. We don't know if they were working at the time. Looks like she may have tried to get out that way and took refuge in another part of the house where she couldn't get out," said Boaz Fire Chief Mike Sparks.

The apartment sustained heavy smoke damage.

The name of the victim has not been released.

Authorities said the cause of the fire remains undetermined but was likely electrical in nature.

More than 40 people have died in fires around Alabama this year, according to state officials.
