ALBERTVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The city of Albertville is trying to determine what to do with an extra nearly half million dollars sent to them by the Alabama trust fund.

City officials said the money comes to cities and counties from the state's offshore oil royalties, but one councilman said he was surprised it was that much.

City officials discovered the windfall at a recent council work session.

Councilman Nathan Broadhurst said the money is limited in what it can be used for. Money from the trust fund can only be used for things such as infrastructure repairs, including roads and bridges, city buildings, equipment, among other things.

The councilman said there are plenty of needs it can go to, but the council will have to make that decision.

Broadhurst said they currently have money in for roads and bridges and feels economic development would be a good investment.

"Right now, we're in the works of trying to enhance our incentive package and include some things we haven't included in the past, and maybe some of these funds can be used to fortify that and give us a competitive edge," Broadhurst said.

No matter how the council decides to spend the funds, Broadhurst anticipates it will be this fall before the funds are spent.
