Redstone Arsenal officials evacuated the Von Braun III building Tuesday after an unknown substance was found.

Investigators are letting employees inside to get their things, but then they are to leave.

The building was evacuated around 9 a.m. after an employee of the Missile Defense Agency discovered a white, grainy, powdery substance in the building.

The Von Braun III building houses 2,700 employees, so at that moment, a decision was made to evacuate the building, shut down the air conditioning system and then call in the guard.

Emergency crews responded, including the FBI and a half-dozen agencies. They first isolated and treated the person who came in contact with this substance out of an abundance of caution.

Once the scene was secure and that patient was treated, testing of that suspicious substance began.

Redstone and Huntsville fire's hazmat team used a meter reader that contains a library of chemicals. According to Col. John Hamilton, RSA Garrison Commander, the substance does not match a known toxin that they are accustomed to seeing.

The clean up of the area where this substance was found is still underway. They are ripping up the carpet and cleaning an area where about 20 people work in the building.

Missile Defense Agency employees were asked to return to work Wednesday no earlier than 7:30 a.m.
